Teach Meditation or Yoga

Freeing the Human Spirit relies on the generosity

of volunteers in local communities to

deliver our program.

To begin the practice of meditation and yoga, it is most
important to have a teacher to lead us. Freeing the Human Spirit relies on the generosity of volunteers in local communities to deliver our program. We are grateful to our 50 teachers for their support and dedication.
For yoga teachers, we ask that you be qualified and certified through an accredited teacher training program. We are also pleased to accept teachers in training. Our program of hatha yoga uses simple and gentle asanas to help the body relax, and become stronger and more flexible, by breathing and stretching away stress and tension. These asanas also help to prepare the body to sit in meditation with more calm and ease.

For meditation teachers, we ask that you have a regular meditation practice and be a part of a regular meditation group.
We use a very simple Zen meditation called Shikantaza. The Japanese word means 'just sitting'. The sitter does not use any specific object of meditation; instead, he or she uses the power developed in concentration by simple breath awareness. The body position is of enormous importance and we have six sitting possibilities. Sitting in one of these positions, and being one with the breath, is Shikantaza.
We use this method because our experience has taught us that it is safe, therapeutic and experiential, which is most important when teaching in prisons.
Classes are usually about one hour in length and consist of 5 to 10 minutes of introduction, 30 minutes of gentle hatha yoga and 20 minutes of meditation.
We offer annual teacher training workshops, with local training as required.

Volunteer to Write Letters

We are indebted to our team of

volunteer letter writers.

Our FTHS volunteers write to prisoners under the supervision and guidance of a staff member who is experienced in the daily practice of the disciplines we recommend.

We use the Prison Phoenix Trust Letter Writer's Manual(created to help new U.K. volunteers feel clear and confident about their work with prisoners. It was put together as a result of suggestions arising from volunteer meetings and is written specifically to show relevant and creative ways to encourage prisoners in their meditation practice, while laying down boundaries for safety in volunteers' contacts with prisoners.
